In 1983, Mike was elected to the first of two terms on Stamford’s Board of Representatives. In 1992, he was elected to the Connecticut General Assembly to represent the 147th House District of Stamford and New Canaan, where he served until 2002. As State Representative, Mike held several leadership posts including ranking member of the Legislature’s Insurance and Real Estate Committee and Assistant House Minority Leader. He also served on the Legislature’s Banks, Transportation and Workforce Development Committees.
 
Over the years, Mike has earned various awards and accolades. The Connecticut Association of Life Underwriters gave him their Legislator of the Year Award. The Connecticut Legal Immigrant and Refugee Coalition honored him for his outstanding public service. In 2002, he received an award from the Italian government for his work on behalf of Italians living abroad.  In 2010, Mike was knighted by the Vatican and Italian Government as a Knight of the Grand Cross of the Holy Sepulchre.
 
On January 3, 2007, Mike was sworn-in as the 107th Lieutenant Governor of the State of Connecticut, serving under Governor Jodi Rell. During his time as Lieutenant Governor, Mike was involved with a variety of projects including taking the lead on economic development issues in numerous business sectors and traveling to China with the National Lieutenant Governors Association on a humanitarian and trade mission. He also produced a monthly cable show promoting various state agencies, programs and economic activities.  He was a regular guest on Fox Business Channel’s “Bulls and Bears Happy Hour”.  Additionally, Governor Rell appointed Mike to the following task forces: Connecticut HealthFirst Authority; Connecticut Judicial Information System IT Task Force; Workforce Innovation in Regional Economic Development (WIRED) Initiative and the Connecticut Employment and Training Commission.
 
Currently Mike is the Chairman of the Stamford Police Commission; member of the Inspirica Advisory Board; the Umbrella Club of Fairfield County; State Street Debating Society and Prometheum. Mike was also Chairman of the Board of Directors at Stamford Hospital; member of the Board of Governor’s at the University of New Haven. He was a board member of the Yerwood Center; the Stamford Public Education Foundation and CTE. Currently he and his wife, Carol, are Co-Chairs of the Stamford Museum and Nature Center’s $20 Million Capital Campaign.
 
Mike has lived in Stamford for 67 years.  Mike and Carol have three children: Michael, Briana and Alesandra and seven grandchildren.
